I couldn’t leave the island of Borneo without ge I couldn’t leave the island of Borneo without getting a hand-poked tattoo, something that had been on my wishlist for a while. Borneo has a rich traditional tattoo culture, making it the perfect place to bite the bullet.

I got a hornbill inked on my arm and two finger tattoos (by far the most painful ones).

Boy, the tattoo artist, was born and raised in the Entalau longhouse in Sarawak and learned the craft from his grandfather.

There was an extra person present to stretch my skin during the session, and honestly, if he hadn’t been there, I wouldn’t have made it through 🫠 I would’ve definitely pulled my arm back multiple times because of the pain.

Two hours later, it was all done, and I’m super happy with both the service and the result! You do walk out without any aftercare or wrap though, only with the reassuring words: “No worries, it’ll heal in a week…” Well, let’s see about that.

I’m keeping the original audio as is, because without it, it just wouldn’t be the same… 😅

The question I got asked the most during my trip t The question I got asked the most during my trip through Borneo: “Isn’t it dangerous for a woman to travel alone in Borneo?” 🦎

An adventurous destination doesn’t equal a dangerous one. If you love untouched jungle, wildlife, active holidays and being outdoors, this is the perfect place. 🦋🌳

I didn’t feel unsafe for even a second. On the contrary, I was treated with extra care everywhere I went, simply because I was traveling solo!

Borneo is also an incredibly easy place to travel through, with a rich culture and warm, welcoming people. ✨

Another week on the island, where animals hide deep in the jungle, where the river brings serene tranquility, and where you wonder if you’ve stepped into a scene from National Geographic as a whole new world awakens when day turns into night.

1. Silvered Leaf Monkey in Bako National Park

2. The view from the beach in Bako. Fun side note: the beaches are full of sandflies that bite. So spending a day lounging on the beach is not exactly recommended.

3. I’ve been dreaming of this trip since I was 16, so very happy to finally be here! So far, it’s everything I hoped for: untouched jungle, not your typical holiday destination so barely any tourists, a warm and welcoming culture, and amazing Asian food…

4. Dreamy sunset in Bako National Park

5. Wagler’s pit viper spotted in Bako. 🐍

6. A female proboscis monkey with her baby in Bako National Park.

7. On my way to Mulu National Park

8. Every evening around sunset, millions of bats emerge from the caves of Mulu National Park. They fly in swirling formations to distract predators, then spend the night foraging in the jungle. A natural spectacle you definitely don’t want to miss! 🦇

9. Cutest squirrel, enjoying a freshly picked breakfast in Mulu. 🐿️
