My ultimate travel bucket list – 100 spectacular places to visit!

31 Mar 2020 | Travel Advice, Travel tips

Here I am at my computer, in my sweatpants. The same jogging that I have been wearing each day since I am stuck at home, quarantined. In the meantime, I don’t even know how many days we are locked in by now. Fortunately, I remember that it is Tuesday today! I woke up at 7:00 am for the first time in a long time, thank you summer time, as normally I see a 6 as first figure on the screen when waking up.

A new week comes with new resolutions. I am dedicated to start this week in good spirits. Because if I can be honest, I don’t know how you went through your first days in quarantine… But mine were hell. I went through a rollercoaster of emotions. Suddenly I was no longer allowed to go to work which I really enjoy doing. Normally, I jump out of bed energetically at 3:45 am and by 4:15 I am sitting in the car on the way to work. Doesn’t feel completely right to call it work because this work puts a smile on my face, with colleagues who are always there for each other, when trying to ensure that thousands of passengers get to their destination on time every day. Every day is a new challenge, with daily problems that are sometimes too crazy to describe.

That I can walk on the tarmac every day among the entire Brussels Airlines fleet. Airplanes which make me feel super small, with dozens of people around me that are making it possible to get every flight up and running in due time. Every time an airplane is pushed backwards as a first step to the takeoff strip, a smile appears on my face and I can’t wait to see the next one being pushed.

No surprise that this smile was hard to find during the last days that I worked. More and more flights were getting canceled. Plains remained on the ground and the airport looked deserted. I took a meter away, distancing me from the passengers who still had to be helped and disinfected my hands after holding each passport. The only news was Corona related and I realized I would rather not be at the airport anymore. Working without protection caused me stress and the uncertainty about when my last working day would be almost made me depressed.

When I suddenly saw my work schedule change to technical unemployment, I became sad, because what now? The future of Brussels Airlines was already not looking that bright in the first place and behind the scenes a reboot plan was being drafted out before Corona. I washed my uniform for the last time and hung it in the closet… Indefinitely. Indefinite, because how long will it take before we can get back to work. A question that we have not yet received an answer to. And that is exactly what makes it so difficult, this uncertainty …

The first days at home were harrowing, it kicked in that I could not have a coffee with my sister, no longer could hug my little niece, had to distance myself from friends and couldn’t leave for Egypt! My husband probably went through hell even harder, because boy oh boy, believe me, I’ve been whining every single hour of the day. But he remained optimistic, opening his laptop every day and kept working as if nothing was wrong. Even now he is sitting in a good mood behind his computer. I am lucky with a husband like this because without him, this rollercoaster of emotions would have been so much heavier!

By now, I am getting used to quarantine, Arne works a lot every day and I try to update my blog. I am quite grateful for all the extra time that I can finally make use of by now. I made a week planning and will try to stick to this. We hold a cooking battle every day and fully enjoy the 10,000 steps we try to walk every day. We are rediscovering our neighborhood and are grateful that our government allows us to leave our homes. And although we have seen our trip to Egypt being cancelled, and I have the feeling that my trips to France and Portugal will not go through as planned at the end of May, I still cannot resist daydreaming about traveling.
