My hometown Antwerp
No matter how much I like to travel, I always enjoy going home as well! Originally I am from Limburg but by now I’m living for almost ten years in Antwerp.
Antwerp is the fashion city of Belgium. A bustling city full of culture, architecture and delicious food.
The best time to visit Antwerp is during spring and/or the summer months, going as of March to September. Although it will be a little busier, you have a less chance of rain and you can fully enjoy the city.
From our national airport in Zaventem, you can take a taxi. But there is also a train station in the airport with trains to Antwerp every twenty minutes. The bus is the cheapest transport into the city and takes up and about 30 minutes.
Once in Antwerp, it's best to move around by bike or by foot.
You can rent a bike by A-velo, with a day pass or week pass you can make short rides between the different Velo-stations.
Top places to visit:
✶ The Red Star Museum
✶Antwerp Central: we have the most beautiful train station of all Europe
✶ MAS museum: definitely go to the rooftop to enjoy a beautiful view over the entire city
✶ Visit the botanical garden and the conservatory
✶ For a walk in the park, go to the Middelheim Park
✶ Enjoy a picnic overlooking the water at “De Scheldebocht”
✶ For architecture you can visit the well-known 't Steen or the Palace of Justice
✶ Pay a visit to Zaha Hadid’s Havenhuis construction
Because of the mix of cultures you can find the best food for everyone in Antwerp. Classics such as Veal stew or steak tartare with French fries. But also vegetarians will love to eat here.
Don't forget to taste our delicious Belgian chocolate, Neuhaus is my personal favorite.
Visit the market on the Oudevaartplaats on Saturday where you can eat hand-made cheese croquettes, but also Moroccan pizzas or fresh oysters.
My favorite spots to eat in the city:
Thanks to the fashion academy, students from all over the world come to study fashion in our city. Big names as Dries Van Noten have the nicest boutiques in town. If you want to do some shopping be sure to visit the Schuttershofstraat and Nationalestraat. You will find the global brands on the Meir. On Sundays you can find a nice flea market in the Kloosterstraat.
Our local craft are the “Hands of Antwerp” . These hands are a reference to the legend about the origin of Antwerp. The giant Antigoon, copped the hands of passing skippers who refused to pay until Brabo killed him. Afterwards Brabo threw the hand of Antigoon in the river (Schelde).
You will find our craft in every souvenir shop formed in cookies or chocolates.
If you look closely at the Mas Museum, you will see that all facades are decorated with little hands.
On the other side of the water, on the left bank, you will find the most beautiful view of the city. You can get there through the pedestrian tunnel at Sint-Jansvliet. Do you want to escape the bustle of the city? Pay a visit to the beach of Sint Anneke, where you can find also a large swimming pool.
For theater performances you can go to the Bourla. Or enjoy a wonderful performance of classical ballet in the Stadsschouwburg. The best concerts take place in the “Sportpaleis”. If you prefer something more intimate, go to Trix or Middelheim. Book your tickets well in advance.
